Abstract: Popular science English (PSE) is a significant mediation in the process of improving the level of the scientific knowledge and scientific literacy of the public. Over the recent decades, international and domestic academics have conducted a wide study on translation of PSE which is mainly in terms of characteristics on vocabulary, grammar, style and translation theories and skills, however, these academics have paid less attention on concluding different translation skills and theories on different areas of translation study on PSE, especially the study on e*ams in China. 1. Introduction

1.1 the background and significance of the study
Most of academics chose to study on English-Chinese translation of PSE, while a few of them tried to narrow down the scope of the study object, in other words, which is the lacking of focalization. For this realistic situation, I aim to specialize in the English-Chinese translation of PSE in NETEM through this paper.
What is NETEM? NETEM is the acronym of National Entrance Test of English for MA/MS Candidates which is a high-stake and nation-wide educational socialized test and one of high-level tests in terms of language competence and education background. Spolsky points out that testing is as much academic as social, culture, economic and institutional. (Spolsky, 1995:2) Spolsky’s statement is fully justified that China is a country where tests play a significant role in the advanced selective educational system. NETEM is the main channel to select the outstanding non-English majored candidates for master degree study in China since 1981. More and more college students are encouraged to take part in this high-level test by our nation’s policy of popularizing higher education and increasing amount of enrollment, which have gained importance of the status of NETEM. So it is really necessary for me to write the paper about translation study on it. The specific meaning of my paper is to conclude some principles and methods for translating popular science English into Chinese which are more or less helpful for some candidates through analyzing past e*am papers.











2. Popular Science English

2.1 PSE vs. EST
Although many PSE works have been translated into Chinese in recent decades, it could not reverse the truth that the study of translation of PSE has long been neglected in China. It is better for me to compare the concept of PSE with EST first in my paper, since many readers and researchers easily confuse PSE with EST, ignoring the distinctive characteristics of PSE, which is beneficial for them to fully comprehend the content of my paper. It is only since 1980s that Chinese scholars have conducted e*tensive and further studies, furthermore, most of which are related to translation principles and strategies of PSE.
