er’s Sister Carrie is the poetic investment made in its chapter titles. These titles were not in the book at first. Manuscripts and correspondence in the Dreiser Collection at the University of Pennsylvania show that this was a very late step in the author’s struggle to bring his book to publication.
The intriguing chapter titles summarize the plot in what F. O. Matthiessen called “magazine verse”; they also tell a story about the writer in relation to his monumental work. There are some twists and turns of the story about these chapter titles. The titles were not written until after Doubleday and Page had returned Dreiser’s long typescript, which had been reduced from a very much long original draft written in pencil. There are some signs that the titles were added as a device to strengthen the appeal of the story of the story— perhaps, even, as a last-ditch attempt to assure the acceptance of a book whose early plight and subsequent history are now legendary. Dreiser later spoke once about having the titles withdrawn when the book was reissued. After Sister Carrie he used chapter titles for fiction only once, in The Titan, and then in quite conventional form. So it is worth analyzing these titles specially.

2. The chapter titles
A full listing of the titles is interesting in its own right and is further justified by the fact that they have never been printed together in a table of contents. (In The Titan, chapter titles were listed with the front matter from the first publication.)
Here are the titles used in the first edition and preserved through all subsequent issues of the book, though a few errors have crept in and continued uncorrected.
