1. Introduction
Involved various traditional Chinese cultural information, such as material culture, religious culture and social culture, A Dream of Red Mansions or The Story of the Stone is a masterpiece that is generally acknowledged as the pinnacle of classical Chinese novel.
Despite changes of history, Chinese people’s love towards A Dream of Red Mansions never declines. Meanwhile, A Dream of Red Mansions has been spread wide abroad along with the development of cultural e*changes between China and other countries. It is the Chinese unique culture that makes them infatuated.
Created by human beings as time went by, culture is the combination of material wealth and spiritual wealth including a set of shared attitudes, values, goals, practices and so on. As an important part of culture, language uses its typical way to reflect cultural information. Literature works are based on specific culture and reflect values, customs, beliefs and other information of each kind of culture. What’s more, translation is a shift of two different languages as well as a communication between two kinds of culture. Therefore, when translating literature works, cultural diversity and comparison are necessary factors that need to pay special attention. Among them, the translator’s subjectivity plays an important role.
Chinese culture is unique and has its own system, which makes great contributions to the human civilization worldwide. Involving nearly every aspect of Chinese culture, A Dream of Red Mansions is very popular all over the world. Until now, it has been translated into English and some other languages, but only two translations are complete versions. At the same time, these two English versions are most popular: One published under the title of A Dream of Red Mansions by Yang Hsien-yi and his wife Glady Yang, and the other in Britain entitled The Story of the Stone by David Hawkes and John Minford (the first 80 chapters are translated by Hawkes.)
This paper will analyze the two translation versions on translator’s subjectivity when translating traditional Chinese cultural information and compare the two versions as well as giving an e*planation on the reasons why the differences occur. What’s more, this paper will also study the influence of translator’s subjectivity on translators shown by their translation purpose and their translation strategies.

2. Introduction to the translators, two different translation versions of A Dream of Red Mansions and theories on translator’s subjectivity

2.1 A brief introduction to Yang Hsien-yi& Gladys Yang, David Hawkes& John Minford and their translation versions

Yang Hsien-yi was a famous Chinese translator who translated many Chinese classics into English with his wife Gladys Taylor, among which A Dream of Red Mansions is one of the most famous ones. He used to study in UK and his wife Gladys Yang was from UK. The couple was keen on Chinese culture and introduced Chinese culture to western readers. They mainly translated works that they enjoyed very much and the main reason for their translating was out of their passion for Chinese literature.
Yang and his wife returned to China in 1940, and began their decades long co-operation of introducing Chinese classics to the English-speaking world. Working for Foreign Languages Press in Beijing, a government-funded publisher, the husband and wife team produced a number of quality translations. The works translated include classical Chinese poetry; such classic works as A Dream of Red Mansions(《红楼梦》), The Scholars, Mr. Decadent: Notes Taken in an Outing (《老残游记》); Liu Es The Travels of Lao Can, and some of Lu *uns stories. Yang Hsien-yi truly made significant contribution to translating ……(未完,全文共28288字,当前仅显示5088字,请阅读下面提示信息。收藏《毕业论文:从译者主体性角度分析《红楼梦》两个译本中文化意象的翻译》
